Pavillion Leidschendam - Netherlands

In 2024 we designed, engineered, and build a sustainable and demountable pavilion for unaccompanied minors in the Netherlands. This unique structure started collaboration with architecture students from TU Delft, who developed design proposals specifically tailored to the needs of this vulnerable age group. Together with Centraal Orgaan opvang asielzoekers (COA) and the European Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF), we developed this pilot project in Leidschendam.

OUR philosophy

At Office for the New Earth, we believe the true role of builders is to elevate their environment. Their task is to translate human needs into material form, a process that becomes more demanding as it becomes more tangible.

This translation is not only achieved through measurable means such as daylight, ventilation, natural materials, and spatial generosity, but also through the immeasurable. Materials shaped by human hands, with care and attention, carry dignity and empathy. When proportions are balanced, forms enriching, and construction radiates lightness, imagination can come to life. A space can begin to welcome you, and call you home.

Such a place belongs in a shelter for minor refugees. Children who were not allowed to simply be children, but fled from violence and uncertainty. In moments where trust has been broken, a carefully crafted environment can become a first step toward reconnection.

In this way, a building becomes more than shelter. It becomes a statement to society that places of need can be transformed into places of hope. That compassion and creativity are not scarce, but generative. And that architecture can be the most tangible expression of that belief.

Interior space

The multi-functional space is used by other organizations providing a wide variety of workshops including carpentry and social activities. A specific workshop area with custom design sitting ‘Blox’ and tables support the use of the space. The Blox are easy to stack in many different ways, evoking a sense of creativity among the teens and inviting them to explore and build.
